Literary Analysis

Frankenstein

Mary Shelly

1. A man named Walton is a sailor who gets trapped in ice while going to the North Pole. He meets a man who travels by dog-drawn sled named Victor Frankenstein and recounts to his sister through letters about the story of the creature he created. As he grows up he attends and university where he consumed about the secret of life. He makes a monster out of old body parts and brings him to life. He runs into and brings his friend back to his apartment to find that the monster had escaped. He hears from home that his youngest brother was murdered but on his was home he finds the monster in the woods where the murder happens and is convinced that the monster killed his brother. He vacations to the woods and the monster finds him and tells him that he did kill his brother and to ask for forgiveness and make him a mate. He ends up destroying the second creation and enraging the monster. He is the trialed for the murder of his friend but acquitted. Then he goes back home to marry Elizabeth scared the monster will come back for him he sends her off. Later the monster killed Elizabeth and the soon after his father dies. He vows to kill the creature he has created. Victor then falls ill and dies. Walton walks into the room to see the creature weeping over him and asks for forgiveness. He says that now his creator has died he can go die to and leaves to the northernmost ice to die.

2. I think the theme of the story is about having dangerous knowledge, secrecy and betrayal. When victor created the monster he was completely frightened by what he had done. Is he did not have this knowledge life for him would have continued on as normal. The secrecy aspect of it I think comes from the creature. He does have feelings although Victor thinks he doesn’t. The betrayal I believe comes from both Victor and the creature because throughout the whole story they continued to cause revenge on each other.

3. The author’s tone is emotional and dark. It is emotional because it shows that the creature was able to love. “You must create a female for me, with whom I can live…” It was also dark with all the murders that were involved. Especially when the creature decided to kill himself, “I shall die, and what I now feel be no longer felt….” Also when the creature expressed him feelings towards his creator, “Cursed, cursed creator!...my feeling of those of rage and revenge.”

4. The point of view changes from Walton to Victor to the creature to show the feelings of all three characters. The prologue set the tone and the setting of where the story is being told. The setting is mainly set on a boat in the Pacific Ocean from a point of where the story is being told. Throughout the story the setting talks place in various places but remains in the same time period. The story is also told from the past to the present.
1. Two examples of direct characterization is when Victor is describing his creation. He is saying that he is a ruthless monster. Another example is when the author tells that he is consumes by the idea and creation of life and that is all the Victor can think of. Two examples of indirect characterization happen twice the the monster he has created. Once it happened when he asked victor if he could make him a companion and here the readers realize that he indeed has feelings. Then second time is after Victor dies the monster decides to go and kill himself because he creator has died. In this instant the readers also see that he is not just a ruthless monster but a caring one. The author uses both of these approaches I think so that the reader can see if the monster really is one of if he is like many other people.
2. The author uses diction because you can see the language change when he has Victor speak and the monster speak. For example you can tell the Victor is way more proper when he speaks and the monster is not. I think he uses this to show that Victor is more educated and the monster is not.
3. If views came that Victor was the protagonist I do believe that he is a dynamic character because his whole life after his creation was made was consumed of fear and wanting revenge. If the protagonist was considered the monster I would say he is also dynamic because throughout the story he was very confused. Then Victor decided to kill his partner I think brought the monster to be overwhelmed by grief and wanting revenge. I believe Victor is a round character because his character changes after his creation and after the death of his wife. I would consider the Monster a flat character because he stays the same pretty much throughout the story. He is created knowing only a few things and does not really know anything else except for what he feels and what he thinks is ugly or wrong.
4. I felt that I came away actually knowing a person. The monster was the one I feel I came away knowing because you were able to see his true feelings and the end of the story when his creator died.

The Following

The Following is a show on Fox that premieres every Monday night at 9pm on Fox. This show is so suspenseful and I encourage everyone to watch it. But if you do not like the blood this isn't the show for you. I have never heard so many literary terms used in actually dialogue in a show that was not for education. The show is about an ex-FBI agent who follows the mind of a serial killer. A serial killer who was an English professor and had a particular interest in the romanticism period and his hero was Edgar Allen Poe. He kills for beauty and rips the eyes out of young girls, because according to Poe eyes were the gateway to the soul. Free remixing all 137 lit terms I was able to understand everything that was being said in the pilot episode. It also shows how powerful a piece of work can affect someone. Although this isn't a true story it is a point of view of what someone can take from a piece of literature. Although I do not think Poe's literature was to convey to people to kill it does have a lot of emphasis on death, beauty and art. This can also relate to the "telephone" game we played in class. Although this game was by word of mouth it conveys the same message of people interpreting things differently. No two people will ever interpret the same thing the same way. This is what brought me to this show. It is a great, suspenseful show that I encourage people to watch. Look out for literary elements not only said but also used. I know I have already caught flashback, motif, and allusion. On top of what was said by the characters, protagonist, prologue, romanticism, etc.
